Its important to use good photgraphs.  A professional photographer is usually a valuable source, but you can take pictures at home in a well lighted area.  The secret is to take a lot of pictures.  In working with photographers in the past, I've found that a lot of them are talented, but a lot of them just use the "volume method".  If you take twenty or thirty photos, some of them are going to be good - allowing you to select your favorites for use in the card.

Don't be in a rush.  After you have the photographs taken, browse through our list of birth announcement cards and pick the ones you like, looking at the preview pages until you settle on a final design.  Common etiquette is to send the birth announcement within 2 weeks of the birth.

Make a list of people that would like to see the baby and be advised of the birth.  Many close friends and family will already know, but they will want a picture and a keepsake, so make sure to include everyone that would enjoy knowing.

It's important to include the babies full name.  If the child is a "Jr." then make sure that it is on the card.  Also include the time of birth, and birth information like weight, size, both parents names and the names of brothers and sisters.
